I feel I have discovered someone who speaks common sense, which seems to be massively lacking in the world we live in.

I totally agree about phones. I've never owned a mobile and, although I have a landline, I rarely use it. I tend to dislike it when anyone except my daughter phones me. I much prefer e-mails, as people don't then witter on endlessly, and I can deal with them in my own time.

I love this! I live for the day when I can get free of my phone. It has been on Silent for 8 years as I cannot be hearing the constant notifications of messages and calls. Great article as always.

Really enjoyed this. Personally I think a mobile phone is as much a curse as a blessing - if it’s on, it is a constant reminder of work and annoying news. I, dread the ring of the land line after 7:00pm - I always anticipate bad news. That’s a throw back to childhood I am sure.

Well done JB for highlighting one of the scourges of modern living. Having been without a telephone for over a fortnight courtesy of BT’s incompetence we found we didn’t miss it. Family contact was maintained via emails or mobile. The lack of calls from “Miclosoft” scam engineers and fake threats from HMRC was a boon.

I loathe the phone, for all the reasons you list. We never had one until I was 18 - it was either the phone box a mile down the road or a neighbour's. And now people get "upset" when I am not available 24/7.

That was a smashing read, full of common sense.

The joyful peal of views chiming with my own! My daughter & I were hectored relentlessly by her peers & mine, because I refused to buy either of us mobiles. Finally capitulated when i accompanied some wheelchair-reliant mates to the Glastonbury stinkhole (but only switched it on once a day to check in with the daughter & her minders) The last thing a mushroom playtime needed was entitled berks ringing repeatedly-the modern equivalent to pests who think I should answer my door, & harangue until it's opened, regardless of the time.

All this to say, you're right, again!

Rarely does the telephone bring joy. Stopped answering mine 4 years ago. Text me, email me but don't ring me.
